Motivating yourself to learn, regardless of what stage of education you are at, is not always easy. Some parts of the material may seem incredibly boring to you, and the sense of lack of meaning in what you are doing may get the better of you. Perhaps you have often wondered how to find the motivation to learn and always be willing to start learning? Below we present a guide in which you will find effective ways to motivate yourself to learn, thanks to which the acquisition of knowledge will become fruitful and quickly begin to bring the intended results. We invite you to read!

What is motivation? Definition of the concept

Before taking any action, it is worth first asking yourself what motivation is? It is an internal desire to perform a given activity, supported by specific factors. There are two types of motivation – internal and external. Intrinsic motivation is the desire to undertake a given action in itself. In this case, a specific activity seems so interesting and exciting that no additional stimuli are needed to persuade the person to perform it.

In turn, external motivation is built, for example, through a reward system. The action itself is not that fascinating, but what happens after performing a certain action is. Therefore, a great way to force yourself to learn, at least at the beginning, is to find the right external motivation, which over time can turn into internal motivation. There are many ways to achieve this – you will learn about them in the following paragraphs.

The basic question is: why study?

The first step to finding motivation to learn may be to answer the question why you actually want to acquire specific knowledge. For example, if you are in high school and want to study at a good university in the future, it is worth studying systematically to achieve a satisfactory result in your high school leaving exam, which will enable you to get into your dream field. How to find motivation to study when you are already in college? Realize that completing them can help you get a well-paid job in your chosen profession.

Moreover, if you are already a student, you probably spent many years studying at earlier stages of your education, which led you to where you are today. It would be a pity to ruin your dreams and waste the time devoted to earlier learning. Motivation to learn may also come from various other sources. You can, for example, establish a reward system that will support you on an ongoing basis in moments of doubt. You know best what brings you the greatest joy and could work this way.

How to find motivation to learn? Start with your immediate surroundings

How to find motivation to learn when you don’t even know where the textbooks, notebooks and supplies you need are? It’s definitely difficult. Chaos on your desk translates into chaos in your head. Although at the beginning cleaning may seem like an unnecessary, additional duty, you will certainly notice a difference in your motivation to learn and the effectiveness of acquiring new knowledge. This is not about general cleaning and wiping dust from all corners of the room before starting to study, but only about putting away all the things you don’t need at the moment and leaving only the necessary writing, highlighting, notes and books on the desk.

You will then have all the things you need at your fingertips and you won’t waste time looking for what you need at a given moment. Nothing will distract your eyes, making it much easier for you to focus on what is in the textbook and notes. In such conditions, motivation to learn often comes by itself.

Intrinsic motivation – how to encourage yourself to learn?

You already know what intrinsic motivation is. However, if you are not sufficiently developed in terms of learning, start with external motivation. There are many different ways to motivate yourself. The previously mentioned reward system is very effective. Your gift for processing a larger batch of material may be, for example, a material item that you have wanted to buy for a long time. However, for smaller parts that you learn in one day, you can reward yourself with doing an activity that relaxes you and gives you pleasure.

In general, the motivation to learn is much greater when all the material is divided into smaller portions. Then the work seems much easier to do. That’s why it’s a great idea to allocate alternating blocks of time for studying and relaxing, e.g. 40 minutes of studying and 10 minutes of walking, browsing social media, eating a snack or doing anything else that makes you happy. You can adjust the length of individual blocks individually to your preferences. To avoid checking your watch every now and then and counting down the time until your break, a great idea is to set alarm clocks for designated times. This technique also has other positive aspects, including: makes it easier to focus.

Ways to motivate yourself – make learning interesting!

How to motivate yourself to learn when it seems boring and absolutely uninteresting to you? Well, this can be a difficult task. However, there is one solution that will help you change your attitude – you can make it interesting yourself! Instead of thinking about how to force yourself to learn, think about how to make you want to come back to this activity. If you have already answered the question why to study, you can now move on to the practical part. First of all, think about the way you learn.

Memorizing all the formulas by heart may prove tedious, even if the subject itself interests you. Try different memory techniques, e.g. using associations, creating mind maps or flashcards. He will make sure whether any application has an accessible formula for learning the subject you need to master. They work great, especially in the case of languages. Test several methods and choose the one that suits you best and gives you the greatest motivation to learn. Of course, there is nothing stopping you from using them interchangeably.

Ways to motivate yourself – change your surroundings!

There have even been scientific studies conducted on this technique. They prove that when learning in a new place, the brain will associate certain issues with it. It’s not only about visual impressions, but also stimuli in the form of smells and sounds. Why learn the same way over and over again when you can visit interesting places and remember a lot more at the same time! If possible, go to a cafe, library or, if the weather conditions are favorable, to a park. Your internal motivation will certainly automatically increase once you reach a given place with one specific goal, which is learning.

Some people, however, may feel overwhelmed by studying in public places. The neighborhood often does not allow for quick access to, for example, a cozy cafe. What to do in such a situation? You can create new experiences even in your own room, for example by lighting a scented candle or playing a different genre of music than usual in the background. So little is enough to make your learning process much more effective.

Jak motywować się do nauki? Rywalizuj ze znajomymi!

Another way to find motivation to study is to study with friends. This way you will combine business with pleasure – not only will you meet your friends, but you will also remember much more. Teaching others is another excellent, incredibly effective technique. Moreover, it is very possible that your friends also have the same problem as you and torment themselves with the question: why study?

You will have a nice time educating each other and, mainly thanks to associations and a change of environment, you will remember many details. Who knows, maybe you will patent your own, new and effective way of absorbing information? To make it a bit more interesting and your mutual motivation to learn even greater, you can introduce an element of competition, e.g. award points, give prizes to the best or invent challenges for people with the lowest scores – it all depends on you – effectiveness counts!

Ways to motivate yourself – keep trying until you find the best one

If you have not used any of the previously described techniques and are just implementing them, do not give up immediately when the first one does not work. There are many ways to motivate yourself to learn, and different ones work best for each person. Also remember that you can modify them as you wish. There are no hard and fast rules here, what matters is the end result, i.e. the effective learning of a given part of the material, without tormenting yourself with finding a way to force yourself to learn. For example, if you feel most motivated when learning with friends and you can’t meet every day, try a similar method that you can practice on your own at home.

For example, you can say out loud what you have just read in your own words. Another method is to compose questions about given issues and then try to answer them without looking at textbooks. Some people, however, are the listening type. If you belong to this group, try to record on a voice recorder how you read aloud the text you need to master, and then listen to it several times. Your motivation to learn will certainly increase when you start seeing the effects of using effective memorization methods tailored to your preferences.

How to find motivation to learn? Choose regularity

An action repeated regularly becomes a habit. So if you develop the habit of studying at regular times, you will never have to wonder how to force yourself to study again. Your body will simply decide that now is the time and will direct you to do it. Due to the varying times at which classes may end and the multitude of other responsibilities unrelated to school, regular study hours may prove difficult to maintain.

However, it is worth establishing a certain order of activities after returning from school. Then, after maintaining such regularity for some time, increased motivation to learn will begin to flow to you on its own. Even though you may not have to learn something new every day, in order to maintain the habit, it is worth repeating some material at least during a planned block of time. Not only will it be better consolidated, but your brain will receive a signal informing it about maintaining the habit.

How to motivate yourself to learn? Learn in the way you like best

Once you have tested all the memorization techniques and found a way to find internal motivation, start learning in the best way for you. It is worth experimenting and learning new, effective ways that make you work, learn and remember more effectively. Many people like to circle important concepts in colors, outline them in boxes, etc. Does this method not work for you? It’s okay, everyone is different.

Keep using your minimalist notes. There are studies that show that the process of remembering what you write by hand on paper is much more effective compared to writing on a computer. However, if the second method suits you better and you feel more motivated to learn, feel free to continue this way. Are you an auditory learner and would you rather give up taking notes altogether and just listen to the text you read recorded on a voice recorder? Great, the most important thing is that you know how to study effectively. Do it in the way that suits you best, and you will be guaranteed that your internal motivation to learn will remain at a constantly high level.

How to find motivation to learn? Put all the steps together

Once you know exactly what motivation is, how it is influenced by various factors and how to motivate yourself to learn in an effective way, no test, session, colloquium or other way of testing your knowledge will be scary for you. All you need to do is find a memorization technique that suits you best, use it regularly, keep your surroundings tidy and develop a system that will help you maintain a consistently high level of internal motivation.

Adapt the above-mentioned ways to motivate yourself by modifying them in any way you want. Test even those that seem pointless to you – you may be pleasantly surprised.

We keep our fingers crossed that you will never have trouble finding motivation to learn again!
